Saturday and Sunday, May 6th and 7th 2000 It's been a long time since I've been to D.C., and there's a lot of things to see during this "urban hike". The last time I was sightseeing in D.C., America was celebrating its Bicentennial, so a few things had changed! Firstly, the Korean and Vietnamese war memorials were not there, as well as some of the exhibits in the Smithsonian exhibits. I've always been fascinated with space exploration, so the first place Lori and I went was the Smithsonian Institution's Air and Space museum. Upon entry, I noticed the moonscape mural, which was a work in progress during my last visit. I'll have to dig out my old photos of it half completed! I finally got to see the Enterprise model, as well as the Apollo 11 command module and all manner of rockets and aircraft. The Hirshhorn museum of modern art was not something an eight year old kid is interested in, so I wanted to take a look at what I missed the last time I was there. most abstract art does nothing for me, but there was an impressive display of late 19th century sculptors, including Rodan, Picasso, Degas and others. It was an interesting visit. After the museums, we took a walk past The FBI, Ford's Theatre and Pershing Park to the White House, where a pro-communism/anti-capitalism protest was taking place. Later we stopped by the Washington Monument, which is still undergoing renovation, despite the fact that the scaffolding is gone. Sunday, we toured the Lincoln Memorial, Korean War Memorial, Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the "Newseum" in Arlington, which is a museum for journalists. We tried to get to the Iwo Jima memorial, but wound up on the Marine base instead . . . we did catch a glimpse of it en route to Arlington. I was surprised at how gigantic it is! All in all, I was about as tired, hungry, dehydrated and sore as I get from any day hike, so I figured that this should count. Lots more photos coming! |
